With Long Lake being one of the closest recreational lakes to the downtown areas, we are a popular destination for a quick urban outing. To maintain a safe environment for our residents to enjoy, LLIA contracts with New Brighton Police Department to have a Monitor patrol the lake on weekends and holidays. Primary responsibilities include:

Monitoring the landing to ensure parking and boat launch rules are being followed
Inform watercraft owners of the Rules of the Lake and High Water/Minimum Wake rules and ensure they are being followed
Providing assistance and support to any public safety events on the lake or at the park
Control the spread of invasive species by informing watercraft owners of the importance of cleaning out water and removing weeds before entering/leaving the boat launch
Assist with backing, launching, and recovery of boats if needed
Informing children of the importance of water safety and life jackets.

Mike Honkanan

Mike has lived in the community for over 20 years, and has been an active member with the New Brighton Police Reserve unit for 15 years, and have spent 10 summers working with the Public Safety department at the Long Lake Regional park, spending time with parking control, ramp control, basic lake and boater safety, and area park safety. He enjoys meeting members of the community, county, and other communities, that come to enjoy the park and our city.

Brian Crocker

Brian is looking forward to serving his eighth year on Long Lake and meeting more of the residents and boaters. His is a long time resident of New Brighton and a graduate of Irondale High School.

Brian attended the University of Minnesota where he studied Sociology of Law, Criminology, and Deviance. He has volunteered his time with various civic organizations in the area and have been a volunteer for the New Brighton Department of Public Safety since 2002. He has been a firefighter for the city for the last 9 years.

He hopes to meet us all this summer on Long Lake and feel free to stop by the boat landing to say hello.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Lake Monitor issue tickets? No, they cannot issue citations and would need to get in contact with the police or sheriff for that. They can issue warnings.

Who should I call if I want to report a safety concern? If it’s an immediate emergency, call 911; non-emergency City of New Brighton 651-767-0640, Ramsey County Water Patrol 651-490-4511.
