LLIA Awarded $3,500 DNR Grant

Hello, all ~ The ice is off the lake and time to start prepping for summer lake life. A couple things to share:

DNR Grant Award: We applied for a DNR Grant and were awarded $3,500 for weed treatment. Weed treatment costs have been going up as we've switched to products that have a longer lasting effect, so this funding will help us manage that. Big thanks to Jennifer Tenenbaum who manages this for us.

Goose Nests - If you see a nest email us. We'll be visiting their usually haunts in the next week or two for addling.

Annual Meeting - I'm planning this for May 1 at 7:00 PM. Details forthcoming. If you know of new lake residents, please point them to LLIA.

Be SAFE!

"Interestingly, EWM was found in the southern basin, but it was not actively growing or particularly dense. Also, most of it was laying flat on the bottom. Thus, treatment is unnecessary. Odd. The north basin, on the other hand, has fairly widespread and dense EWM, suitable for treatment."

2022 Luminary Walk Recap

Despite some windy conditions, we had over 100 people come out to enjoy the luminary trail and tree burn.

Next year we'll need some more help, so please consider helping out for a few hours the afternoon of the event for setup. Creating the trail is a bit of a daunting task where many hands can make light work.

Big thanks go out to this years volunteers:

Dana and John Johnson plus their nephews for helping to make the trail and for hosting a firepit and other fun stuff

Jake Shaver for providing traditional ice luminaries for the main firepit

Luke Broghammer for christmas tree collection and Logan Broghammer for luminary take down

Mike Battaglia, Dale Swanson and Larry Valtinson for hosting additional fire pits along the trail.

Sam Hickman for luminary setup and take down assistance

Jason Scott for safety committee assistance

StarTrib Article on Long Lake Carp Mitigation

Just a quick heads up on a StarTrib article that came out yesterday regarding the carp status on Long Lake; New tools in fight to remove carp

They referenced 1,000 carp were removed at the electronic fence located by the trestle bridge over Rice Creek and another 7,000 via the box nets. That's approximately 80,000 pounds of biomass and took quite a bit of human muscle to fill boats and load the carp into trailers ~ a much worse job than our annual Clean Up Day (which is scheduled for the Saturday after Labor Day, btw!).

I visited the landing while they removed the box netted carp and took a picture of one of the trailers ~ yuk!

We're lucky to have focus on our lake and we hope these mitigations will continue to improve water quality. I'll keep you posted as I learn more.

Weed Treatment Update

RCWD contracted with Blue Water Science to have our delineation map completed on June 22. We have provided it to Lake Restoration and encourage you to contact them if you'd like your lake shore or dock treated when they're on the lake.

Note that some of the red and yellow areas of the north basin were not circled as part the treatment ~ in those ares, milfoil appeared very unhealthy and determined not to be worth the money to treat.

Lake Restoration will be out in the next few weeks to treat approximately 5 acres with Diquat, the same product they used last year. I'll keep you posted when I hear of a specific date.

More information regarding our weed treatment process can be found here:

Lake Monitor Update

New Brighton Police Dept has partnered with us for many years to monitor the boat launch and lake, but they informed us a few months ago that they would be unable to provide continued support for multiple reasons, primarily due funding, lack of personnel, and a hiring freeze. This left us in an uncomfortable position for 2020 where the COVID situation may draw more people to the lake seeking recreation with no management of the landing and lake.

With our limited funding, we pursued multiple options to provide coverage and found a creative solution in utilizing an Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Program provided through Ramsey County. They have agreed to provide:

AIS monitoring of boats entering/leaving Long Lake

Pass out a postcard with the lake rules and recommended usage guidelines when the lake is busy; where to paddle, where to anchor, where to ski

Keep an eye on parking spots and inform boaters when the lake is at full capacity

In the past, Ramsey County Sheriff has focused their attention on other lakes knowing that we have New Brighton PD providing support. We have informed the Sheriff’s Office of our situation and asked that we are included in their typical rounds, particularly from 5:00-7:00 PM on weekends and holidays when the no wake rule goes into effect. Expect to see them on the lake more often.

I think this is a win/win scenario to get both AIS and lake monitoring. We’ll see how it works this year and go from there. Please email us at llianewbrighton@gmail.com with comments or suggestions.

Special thanks to the following for a truly collaborative effort:

Our Public Safety Committee of Leon Kline, Caroline Beckman, and Wayne & Debbie Eck who coordinated with New Brighton PD, Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office, and the Ramsey County AIS program to resolve this situation

Our Water Quality Committee of Rich Kusick and Jason Scott who informed us of this AIS program

Justin Townsend who runs the AIS program at the County who helped find a creative and affordable solution for us

Stephanie Johnson who runs a company called Water Guards which the County subcontracts for AIS monitoring services

Be safe and enjoy!

Lake McCarrons zebra mussel infestation

The below message is from Justin Townsend, Ramsey County Aquatic Invasive Species Coordinator. Please keep a lookout for Zebra Mussels on Long Lake so we can act fast ~ It's important to catch these infestations as early as possible. Email llianewbrighton@gmail.com if you see anything suspicious.

As some of you may already know Lake McCarrons has been listed by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) as infested with zebra mussels on Friday 8/22/2019. Ramsey County will be releasing a more formal press release. I wanted to give you some background and future plans in a short email here. As always if you have questions contact me.

A volunteer on a regular search of the lake found the zebra mussels and promptly reported it to the DNR. The DNR confirmed the presence and worked with Ramsey County and Capitol Region Watershed District to search the whole lake. Unfortunately, zebra mussels were found widespread and evenly across the lake. Based on the size and spread the infestation is likely 2 years old, possibly more. The population was far to widespread for a treatment. What I would like to do is monitor the population levels so we can better understand the patterns of infestation. I am also going to reach out to the University of Minnesota’s Genomics lab to see if we can see where these zebra mussels are from. All of this will take time. As information is given to me I will pass it along to the wider group.

You can find the DNR press release here http://news.dnr.state.mn.us/2019/08/22/zebra-mussels-confirmed-in-mccarron-lake-in-ramsey-county/. I echo their prevention language and would add that this once again reinforces the obligation we all have to protect these beautiful resources. Clean, Drain, Dispose and do not sell or purchase docks, lifts, etcetera unless it has been dry for 21 days.

Milfoil Treatment Scheduled for Week of July 22

Per the Public Notice: 2019 Milfoil Treatment, LRI will be on Long Lake the week of July 22nd to perform the weed treatment.

We've been informed by LRI that it is too late to obtain permits for individual treatments, so we'll need to get a jump on that for next year. This year's high water pushed the delineation mapping and overall schedule out a few weeks.

Public Notice: Milfoil Treatment for 2019

Issuing this posting to our members is part of the due diligence required to obtain a signature waiver per the DNR permit approval requirements.

We have contracted with Lake Restoration Inc (LRI) and will determine a treatment date contingent on the approval of our Invasive Aquatic Plant Management (IAPM) Permit, which will likely be the first half of July.

LRI will be using a product called "2-4-D", which is the most commonly used herbicide in Minnesota to control Milfoil and is DNR approved.

The treatment areas can be found here: Long Ramsey EWM 2019 updated 070919.jpg. LLIA will file a group permit for the treatment areas listed, but if you want your dock treated please reach out to LRI directly.

We'll be in contact once we have treatment dates locked in.

I had the opportunity to testify yesterday in front of the Natural Resource Finance Committee on behalf of a bill Connie Bernardy is sponsoring to request $1,000,000 of grant money support to lake associations to support our fight against AIS. If this comes to fruition, it will certainly help support our milfoil management plan and whatever else may come our way.

Big thanks to Connie for sponsoring this and hopefully we have some good news to share as this is reviewed by our legislators.

Just want you all to know we're working to maximize the effectiveness of your annual contributions to LLIA through utilization of grant programs. In this case, even helping to get the grant created!

Ask our Senators for More AIS Funding

For many years the MN DNR made about $800,000 in grants to lake associations to help them manage aquatic invasive species (AIS). But in 2016 they cut the grants in half, to $400,000. The next year they ended them altogether.

SF 1062, authored by Senator Rich Draheim, and joined by Senators Rudd, Ingebrigtsen, Jensen, and Eichorn would, if passed into law, provide $1 million of General Fund money in 2020 and 2021 for matching grants to lake associations for controlling aquatic invasive species. No more than 10% of the funding may go to a single lake association. This is nothing within the $49 Billion dollar budget proposed.

Please click TAKE ACTION to send our Senator an email asking them to support this legislation. While AIS is a statewide problem, for too long the costs have been the burden of lake associations such as ours. LLIA deserves support in the work we do to protect Long Lake for the public good of a healthy ecosystem.

Ramsey County AIS Work Plan Volunteers Needed

LLIA along with representatives from other lake associations in the county have been meeting to come up with an Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) plan with a goal of setting up a long term program to combat AIS. More people to volunteer than just one person per association as not all lake association representatives are able/willing to be on subcommittees.

We have narrowed it down to 3 subcommittees to work on the tactics provided here: Ramsey County AIS 2019.PDF

Our very own Rich Kusick has volunteered to be on the “Minimize Infestations” committee with my main interest in helping obtaining additional funds and partnering with others for funding. If we have anyone within our lake association that would be willing to assist with setting up and implementing the details within the 3 mission topics please contact us at llianewbrighton@gmail.com and we'll put you in contact with Rich.

They're looking to get these subcommittees set up within the next few weeks so they get going on a plan to implement these ideas and goals this summer. They're actually working on a long-terms plan for the next 5 years as well, which this work plan will be a part of.

Who’s in for some fun and having a part in helping improve water quality controlling AIS?

Why aren't my dock and shoreline being treated for milfoil?

I wanted to respond to the questions I've had concerning the upcoming weed treatment and manage expectations as we've learned more about the process. The dock and shoreline area of our properties will not be treated. Here is the reasoning behind that:

DNR will only allow 15 acres of herbicidal treatment annually for the entire lake ~ we, as a group of neighbors formalized through LLIA, will treat 10-12 acres for passage, usage, and aesthetic reasons (unsightly weed matting) where owner signature is not required. (More info on the DNR's Site)

Individual shoreline treatment would require that we work with each owner individually for DNR permitting. We don’t have the resources to do that.

We are treating the area of the lake with no accountability of ownership, which benefits all owners of the lake to have this managed.

The remaining 3-5 allowable acres of treatment that we do not provide are for owners to apply/receive an individual treatment. If we used all 15 acres no individual permits would be allowed for owners that have substantial weeds issues.

If you have weeds around your dock and swim area I encourage you to review the Individual AIS Treatment page for more information on what's required to obtain and treat your property. I am also happy to respond to any individual questions as well. (And I plan to enter a forum soon about my personal experience treating milfoil at my property)

I understand this is less than convenient and we would all prefer to have the weeds treated for us. However, for the reasons above this won't be possible at this time. Please understand that your contributions are needed to facilitate the offshore treatment along with the boat monitor for ramp management, boat inspection, lake safety, and general enjoyment. As we close out our process around the milfoil treatment plans, I look forward to the next issue we can tackle together ~ more information forthcoming as we build our Board of Directors and Officers later this fall/winter.

Be safe out there,
John Broghammer

Public Notice: Milfoil Treatment

Issuing this posting to our members is part of the due diligence required to obtain a signature waiver per the DNR permit approval requirements.

We have contracted with Lake Restoration Inc (LRI) and will determine a treatment date contingent on the approval of our Invasive Aquatic Plant Management (IAPM) Permit, which will likely be the first half of July.

LRI will be using a product called "2-4-D", which is the most commonly used herbicide in Minnesota to control Milfoil and is DNR approved.

The lake will be treated based on the 2018 Long Lake EWM Delineation Areas- revised.jpg. LLIA will file a group permit. If you desire treatment in front of your property there's nothing for you to do. However, if you do not want treatment please email us with your name and address by July 1, 2018 and we'll remove your property from the treatment plan.

We'll be in contact once we have treatment dates locked in.

Thanks for your ongoing support!

The Minnesota Aquatic Invasive Species Research Center and University of Minnesota Extension has opened registration for the 2018 season of the AIS Detectors program.

Participants in the AIS Detectors program receive expert training on identifying and reporting AIS as well as base aquatic ecology, prevention, MN rules and regulations training and more. Upon completion of the training, participants are asked to provide 25 hours of annual service in the field of aquatic invasive species. This service can take many forms that we generally categorize as Citizen Science, Stewardship, Outreach/Education, and Program Support. This may include activities specific to your lake or lake area such as monitoring for AIS and local outreach/education. Participants choose what form of service suits them best and are free to create grassroots projects or service. You can find more information at www.aisdetectors.org. I also encourage you to check out this issue of Source magazine which features our program and some of our volunteers from last year.

Invasive Weed Treatment Update for 2018

Our site has been updated to include Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) management plans for LLIA as an organization and for individual home and easement owners seeking additional treatment options:

LLIA AIS Treatment

Individual AIS Treatment

For 2018, LLIA will treat large scale invasive weed outbreaks, primarily Curly Leaf Pondweed and Milfiol, based on RCWD Delineation Maps, but home and easement owners may need to seek a permit for self treatment if not covered within the delineation map and/or for ongoing treatment. The pages referenced above provide the details, but please let us know if you have any questions or start a Forum entry to voice your constructive feedback where we can all follow along.

Thanks for your ongoing support!

To All Above:

Thank you all for your time, consideration and support in providing funding for treatment of Aquatic Invasive Species in Long Lake for the summer of 2017. Our association was very pleased to hear your positive views on the value and importance Long Lake brings to the City of New Brighton and community. One of our association’s goals is to maintain and improve the water quality for all who use the lake to boat, kayak, canoe, fish & swim. Without your generous funding, we would not be able to treat for invasive species of weeds we treated this summer.

Mayor Val Johnson and City Manager Lotter both went above and beyond their respective duties to further assist our fund seeking & sharing efforts. They were able to schedule us to meet with Ramsey County Commissioners, House of Representative Connie Bernardy as well as the opportunity to address both the MN House and Senate regarding funding for Aquatic Invasive Species.

It was our pleasure working with you all for the betterment of the City of New Brighton and Long Lake.

I’m proud to say our City’s elected officials really stepped up to support such an important issue and asset for everyone in the city.

Carp Management Update

Some of you may have seen the Box Nets installed on both the north and south basins of the lake. This is the beginning of the implementation strategy for Carp Management. We've updated our website at Water Quality > Carp Control with more information and links to a report and 40 minute video presented by Matt Kocian regarding the state of carp in Long Lake and management plan moving forward.

Big thanks to Matt and RCWD for their leadership in this area. We are breaking new ground and if successful this plan may be used for other lakes across the State.

Thanks to our Clean Up Day Volunteers

Big thanks to our 15 member crew that volunteered to pickup trash from the park and boat landing lake shore areas. As one would suspect, the most common items were bottles, cans, and plastic bags. However, other interesting items were found as well.

Not only does this help clean up the park shoreline, but also helps to prevent trash from getting back in the lake during high water periods.

We are evaluating spring Clean Up Day dates. We are considering Earth Day weekend April 21, but the water may be too high and cold at this time. Please stay tuned and watch for event notifications.

LLIA would like to thank Dan Olson, Deputy Director of Public Safety, and Charlie Prasek, City Public Works Department, for their assistance with LLIA requests. They installed a flashing beacon on the No Wake sign for when the high water, no wake rule is in effect. They also installed a large flag pole they will raise a flag on when the high water, no wake rule is in effect, so anyone on that side of the lake can see it and know the rule is in effect.

Final Plan for Milfoil Treatment

We appreciate your patience as we learn the process for the first time, but we're happy to announce that a plan has been finalized.

We have contracted with Lake Restoration Inc (LRI) and will determine a treatment date contingent on the approval of our Invasive Aquatic Plant Management (IAPM) Permit, which will likely be the first half of July. Submitting this email to our members is part of the due diligence required to obtain a signature waiver per the DNR permit approval requirements.

LRI will be using a product called "2-4-D", which is the most commonly used herbicide in Minnesota to control Milfoil and is DNR approved.

The lake will be treated based on the 2017 EWM Delineation Map. LLIA will file a group permit. If you desire treatment there's nothing for you to do. However, if you do not want treatment please email us with your name and address by July 1, 2017 and we'll remove your property from the treatment plan.

We'll be in contact once we have treatment dates locked in.

Milfoil Update ~ Delineation Mapping Complete

RCWD surveyed the lake for EWM on June 6th and created the 2017 EWM Delineation Map. The first thing to note, is that it's a bit different from the 2016 EWM Delineation Map and some homeowners have experienced a reduction in EWM. Also, the water was still quite high on June 6 and EWM may have still been emerging.

Per RCWD, aquatic plants can change from year to year based on many factors. In Long Lake, those factors include water clarity, common carp, and management with herbicides. Water clarity can vary in Long Lake dependent on seasonal rainfall and temperature. When high rainfall and hot weather generate algae, there is less sunlight for plants, and you'll see less milfoil. Common carp are excellent "ecosystem engineers" - they change their environment through their behavior. Their feeding behavior decreases water clarity, and uproots plants. Long Lake is known to have a very high carp population, especially in the winter, and we have an ongoing plan for carp control.

We are working with LRI regarding treatment options, but in the meantime want feedback from homeowners regarding the delineation map. If you feel you have an EWM issue that isn't referenced on the map, please add a comment to this news article with your address so we can note it.

Algae Bloom Remediation

Through our recent door knocking activity, several residents expressed concerns about what can be done about lake algae blooms in the summer.

Some of you may be aware of the Long Lake Targeted Water Demonstration Project being facilitated by RCWD. Out of the $7.2M budget, $4.8M has been allocated to the Hanson Park Water Management Project. Along with providing flood control, this project will also improve water quality with the construction of an iron-enhanced sand filter which will reduce phosphorous loading downstream to Pike Like and Long Lake by 150-250 pounds annually ~ this is estimated to 20-50 tons of algae growth eliminated!

The Hanson Park Pond collects water from Silver Lake, Mirror Lake, and stormwater runoff that ultimately runs into Pike and Long Lake on it's way to the Mississippi.

The Iron-Enhanced Sand Filter will be completed this summer, but won't be operational until 2018.

Please visit the RCWD link above for the latest updates and more info.

Formation of the Ramsey County AIS Task Force

Long Lake is not the only Ramsey County Lake dealing with Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS). As a result, the lake associations within the county are banding together to approach the county for support in remediation.

LLIA President, Rich Kusick, attended the Ramsey County AIS Task Force Meeting on May 4th, which was also attended by Ramsey County Representative, Connie Bernardy. This year, Ramsey County receives $98,472 from the State of MN for AIS Prevention Aid.

Since the AIS Prevention Program’s inception in 2014, Mike Goodnature of Ramsey County Park & Rec Dept. had been overseeing the program and distribution of funds. In 2017, the County decided to hire a full-time employee, Michelle Prosser, to oversee the program and funds. With this, they decided to form a “Task Force” to help determine what should be done and where the funding should be used. They no longer are giving money to each lake association to use at their discretion for AIS education and prevention. The County is keeping the money and will be outsourcing/hiring monitors to be at the County’s boat ramps as well as looking for volunteers to fill in the gaps. Previous year’s cost per hour for monitoring was $10-12 per hour. With the new program, the County has decided to outsource the training and scheduling of monitors at a cost of $18 per hour. As you can see, starting with $98K, paying a new full-time government employee to oversee the program and then raise the cost of monitoring 50% for outsourcing it, there isn’t much money left to do anything else. There was also a discussion regarding the increased need for education and prevention of other AIS such as Starry Stonewort and Flower Rush. They are also very disruptive AIS and need to educate and prevent them from spreading into our lakes. http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/invasives/aquaticplants/index.html

We thought the task force was going to have some input on how the money was going to be budgeted and hoping to get some for AIS treatment. Unfortunately, we really have no say in budgeting and they were looking for the task force to help the new director, Michelle Prosser, with new ideas and running the program. There is NO money available to be used for any treatment.

Long story short, we will need to find other sources of grants and cost sharing on our own. LLIA, along with other lakeshore associations, are working on coordinating an effort to work together to come up with ideas of where to find these funds. All lakeshore representatives were in agreement that each lake association shouldn’t have to come up with their own ideas of innovative treatments and funding sources. Seems like we’re each being asked to re-invent the wheel and we’re not specialists in the field. There was agreement that this should ultimately be a State funded and managed program for all lakes in the state/county.
Thanks for your support and we’ll keep you updated as the Task Force formalizes.

Curly Leaf Pondweed (CLP) Treatment Update

Rice Creek Watershed District (RCWD) performed a CLP Delineation Study on April 7, 2017 to check the distribution and density of the weed. Very little was found and where it was found was low density as referenced in their map, which can be viewed here: Long CLP Apr2017.jpg

As a result of this study, it has been recommended by the DNR that treatment of low density CLP is an expensive endeavor with limited return and they advise against large scale herbicide treatment.

Being that we have virtually no offshore treatment areas that qualify as a group for this type of treatment, that would leave homeowners to decide if you want individual treatment. If you are interested in treating your lakeshore, please email us and we can help facilitate a group discount (20+ homeowners). Homeowners will be responsible for the cost of approximately $220-$300.

At this point, LLIA will be focusing our efforts on milfoil. If it is found that CLP has expanded greatly in the spring, limited shoreline treatments may make sense and we’ll review at that time.

RCWD will be performing a mapping of milfoil in the coming weeks and we’ll provide more information as available.

Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Volunteer Ambassador Training

We are looking to judge interest in the Ramsey Conservation District holding an Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Volunteer Ambassador training.

As an AIS Ambassador you will undergo training by the MN DNR. This will prepare you to educate the public about invasive species at public accesses. While the AIS Ambassador role is strictly educational, it plays an important part in reminding boaters of the importance of protecting our waters.

Please contact LLIA here with names and contact information if you be interested in attending this training. If we have at least 20 people sign up, the Ramsey Conservation District will host an AIS Ambassador training here in Arden Hills.

If you have any questions, please let us know at llianewbrighton@gmail.com.

2017 Ice Out: March 7

Warm temps and wind are the conditions needed to erode lake ice from lake surfaces. Throughout February and March we experienced temps above freezing, according to the National Weather Service. On Monday and Tuesday winds reached high levels, up to 20-30 MPH with gusts up to 50 MPH, which contributed to our early ice out.

City of New Brighton Approves Up To $15,000 Towards Weed Control

Members,

LLIA would like to thank the New Brighton City Council Members, Mayor Val Johnson and City Manager Dean Lotter for their tireless support of the treatment funding Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) in Long Lake. They all sat through many meetings to listen and learn of our concerns with AIS in Long Lake and stepped up to fund the treatment for this year. Their commitment this year is up to $15,000 toward the treatment of AIS. You can view the City Council Meeting on 2/28/17 here at http://newbrighton.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.php?view_id=2&clip_id=632 the LLIA content starts at the 20.50 minute mark and goes through the 34 minute mark. They did a great job on the overview, discussion and comments of the LLIA.

Moving forward, annual treatment will be required as AIS can be managed but not eradicated. Therefore, the City of New Brighton will be expecting additional parties to participate in funding for future years. We are continuing to seek future funding participation with Ramsey County and possibly the State of MN. Rep. Connie Bernardy has introduced state legislation to fund projects such as this. LLIA has also applied for limited grant money available this year with the MN DNR. The LLIA will work with the MN DNR, Ramsey County and the Rice Creek Watershed District to monitor treatment and it’s effectiveness in the years ahead.

LLIA, as an organization, will be required to participate as well, estimating we will be required to contribute 1/3 of future AIS funding needs. Therefore, each member’s annual contribution is necessary toward this need, as well as boat monitoring obligations. You can sign up and contribute www.llianewbrighton.org

I would like to thank LLIA member, Caroline Beckman for her time and expertise with assisting in preparing our request to the City of New Brighton and Ramsey County. She assisted in multiple preparatory meetings as well as attended City Council Workshops and City Council Meetings. I was out of town for a couple of the meetings and Caroline filled in and represented LLIA magnificently on behalf of us all.

Thanks to John Broghammer for all of his work on research, design and implementation of our new website llianewbrighton.org. We have received many compliments on its looks, content, and ability to collect dues online. This is a valuable tool for LLIA members as well as community members who want to stay up to date with information and upcoming events available on the website.

Thanks to John Johnson for his collection of dues and email notices for the past year. We’re hoping the website will replace the need to send out individual emails in the near future. In the meantime, I apologize for any duplication of information until the conversion is complete. If you haven’t done so yet, please sign up on the website.

Finally, thank you to all who have, or will be making, their tax-deductible donations to LLIA. We look forward to the continued growth of the LLIA organization for promoting safe recreational experiences and improved water quality. We will be able to achieve our goals with your continued support in the future.

Sincerely,

Rich Kusick

Despite the short notice, I want to thank those who emailed the Council Members and attended the Council Meeting this evening. We had approximately 12-14 lake owners in attendance.

Rich Kusick began the discussion around the needs for lake weed control and several lake owners addressed the Council directly with their concerns on Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) and their impact on the lake.

Our perception for City assistance is optimistic for initial funding to address the invasive weeds, but we’ll need to develop a long term, sustainable plan that involves LLIA, the City of New Brighton, and Ramsey County to continue the remediation process.

The Council will be meeting on Feb 28th at 6:30 to vote on funding weed control on Long Lake. We’d appreciate your attendance or voice your support of funding to: val.johnson@newbrightonmn.gov; gina.bauman@newbrightonmn.gov; mary.burg@newbrightonmn.gov; paul.jacobsen@newbrightonmn.gov; brian.strub@newbrightonmn.gov; dean.lotter@newbrightonmn.gov

We appreciate your support and involvement,

Invasive Weed Control Update

The City Council will be meeting on Feb 14th at 6:30 PM to discuss funding for treatment of AIS in Long Lake. They will be discussing it and hearing from those in attendance, so please try to attend if you can or email those referenced below with your concerns.

The City meeting on Feb. 28th will be to vote on whether to fund it and what to expect moving forward. The City of New Brighton will be proposing to spend up to $15,000 this year for treatment as they understand time is of the essence and doubtful Ramsey County will have any funding approved that quickly.

After this year, the City will be looking for assistance in funding from Ramsey County as well as LLIA (and any other source we can come up with).

Please see more information in the Events section for the City Hall Meetings and please voice your AIS concerns directly to our Council Members at the following email addresses:

Carp Netting Unsuccessful

Ramsey County has informed us that the commercial effort to remove carp was unsuccessful due to the net getting snagged on debris. This prevented them from bringing in any fish. They’re hoping to give it another try before the end of winter and we'll keep you posted.

Commercial Carp Fisherman Setting Up in North Bay

Carp fishermen began setting up today by cutting a trench through the ice where the netting will go. They've setup thin ice signs around this. They'll be on the lake for a few days and should be wrapped up before the weekend.

Ice In: December 8

After a warm November, the south bay finally froze up on December 8th. Hopefully we have some cold temps ahead to make it safe. Remember, 4 inches of ice to safely walk on.

Lions Park

I've seen bulldozers around the regional park, but couldn't find any information. I reached out to Ramsey County and received this response.

The proposed Lion's Park in New Brighton is a collaborative park project between the city of New Brighton and Ramsey County Parks & Recreation. The New Brighton city portion of park will be located just to the south of Long Lake Regional Park and will include a softball field, lacrosse/multi-purpose field, play area, trails and related park amenities. Ramsey County is planning park development that will complement the new park, including a park shelter, nature play area, trails, restrooms, parking lot and additional park amenities within the portion of Long Lake Regional Park that is directly adjacent to Lion's Park. As a part of the Lion's Park development project, a shared parking lot, trail connections and associated site grading and utility improvements will be made to allow future amenities to be completed.

For more information on the project, please click on the attached link: http://www.newbrightonmn.gov/new-park-constructed-new-brighton/

Please let me know if you have any further questions.
Tree Removal in the Regional Park

I reached out to Ramsey County and got this info regarding the tree removal.

The trees that are being removed around the park are all for a natural resource restoration project to promote and restoration of the oak woodlands and conversion of brome field to prairie. The majority of the material is invasive buckthorn, with other larger trees being removed to decrease the encroachment on the oak trees and field areas that will be converted to prairie. This will allow more sunlight to the Prairie and forest floor to promote growth of native grass and forb plants within the understory. Clearing efforts will continue this winter and then a prescribed burn through numerous areas around the park this spring of 2017 followed by native seed and oak trees being planted.

The information about the Long Lake restoration will be posted on our website shortly.
